August Wrap-Up

Wow, August on the blog has been packed! I actually blogged every single day this month thanks to the #BlogFlash2012 event hosted by Terri Giuliano Long. I never think that I have much to say on here outside of book reviews but it turns out that all I need is a prompt to start from. I would never have imagined that I would be posting poetry or bits of fiction along with memories and ponderings but that is what came out. I hope you have enjoyed these postings as I know they are very different from the content that I usually have here. I'm happy to hear that the event was a huge success and it will probably continue in a smaller form. If you joined me from the BlogFlash event I hope you will stick around to see what else I have to offer.

I didn't do much reviewing this month but I have been reading. I just need to take the time to get the reviews written up! I'm not letting myself start another book until I get the three reviews that I need to do written. Then I'll be diving back into eBooks with Online Couponing in a Day for Dummies by Beth Montgomery of the blog In Good Cents. I love Beth's blog and I definitely need some help with finding coupons and getting great deals so I'm looking forward to reading this one.

The Indie Exchange: September Social Splash
The summer giveaways run through The Indie Exchange have come to an end but September is going to have one of the biggest giveaways yet. Be sure to enter the September Social Splash giveaway which starts tomorrow and runs all month. Not only will you have a chance to win an Amazon gift card but you will discover some great blogs and authors as you enter.

September should see my posting volume return more to normal with more reviews and guest posts for blog tours. I'm also hoping to offer up a giveaway of my own but I'm still working on the details for that one. What do you have planned for your blog for September?

Winning #BlogFlash2012 Day 30

After a night of being up with a coughing kid and very little sleep, I'm not feeling very winning today. I expected to have this morning to myself while she was at preschool and had planned to get lots done. Instead I hear Go, Diego, Go in the background along with coughing and requests for tissues. Baby girl seems to have a touch of the cold too and won't sleep when I put her down.

Why do I tell you all this? It isn't so I can complain about how rough my day has been and get your parenting sympathies. I tell you because today I am realizing that wins in my world are often small things that might easily be taken for granted.

A good night of sleep, a quiet lunch, time to read, a phone call with a friend, heck even getting a shower by myself. Just one of these little things can help turn around a difficult day. That makes it a little win for me.

Masquerade #BlogFlash2012 Day 29

Although her face was hidden behind her mask and she wore a dress no one would recognize, she kept to the shadows as she watched the dancers. Would he come or would all her planning be for nothing? Would she even recognize him or would he be lost among the masks and elegant clothing? Her anxiety increased as the hours passed with no contact. In a bold move, almost born of desperation, she stepped out on to the dance floor. She knew she risked discovery but she had to take the chance if she were to find him and finally make her escape.

Frog #BlogFlash2012 Day 28

I have to admit that I'm not finding a whole lot of inspiration from the frog today. I do have some froggy memories though.

My dad was a college chemistry professor and when I was a kid he taught classes on water chemistry at the Central Michigan University Biological Station on Beaver Island. Here the kids of the professors all got a chance to play and be underfoot in the labs. We ate in the cafeteria with the college students and had sand everywhere from the beach. One particular biology professor was quite the instigator and was always trying to get me to take critters back to our cabin, including snakes and frogs.

My family owns a piece of property that we've had through at least a few generations now. I never know quite how to describe it but it is essentially our own area of woods and lake. This is where I learned to fish and row a boat. It is where my cousin and I would sit still in the water and see if the baby fish would come nibble our toes. It is also where we can sit out on a clear night and see the stars and listen to the lullaby sung by the frogs.

History #BlogFlash2012 Day 27

I love visiting historical sites when I travel. The summer before I had American History in high school I was able to visit my aunt and visit some of the many great historical sites in Boston and New Hampshire. I've been to Louisa May Alcott's house and walked around Walden Pond. One spring break in college my mom and I traveled to New Mexico to see what inspired Georgia O'Keeffe to paint. While museums are wonderful, I really like to be able to visit the sites where events took place and see the story from what remains. I love experiencing the traditional cultures of a place and learning the history of the people who live there. There is something about having that connection to the past that gives me hope for the future.

Seeing #BlogFlash2012 Day 26

We all see things differently based on our past, our present, and our hopes for our future. My experiences color how I see the world and your experiences, similar and different, color your view. You and I can read the same book and see it in different ways. This is one of the joys of reading.

Unfortunately this is also one of the causes of controversy. Words written with one intent by the author can be viewed with a different intent based on the perspective of the reader. We may interpret words based on the emotional reactions that they inspire in us. Sometimes we react quickly without thinking that we could be adding layers to the words that may not be seen by others.

I wonder how much moral outrage could be avoided if we all took a deep breath and a step back to view situations from a different perspective?
